To be designated a Viticulture Area, the growers of the region must Growers must petition the Tax and Trade Bureau to obtain an AVA designation for a region. The Bureau's decision is based on characteristics such as an area's topography, soil type, climate, and elevation.  The American system was implemented in 1978 to identify U.S. Wines in a fashion similar to the French appellation d'origine contrôlée system.  The first Appellation in the United States was recognized in 1980 as the Augusta AVA in Missouri.  Shawnee Hills American Viticulture Area was recognized in 2006.
